July 2010

The month of June marked the end of the youth 14 and under freestyle and greco wrestling season. On June 5 and 6, 14 kids went down to the freestyle state championships in Fresno. Of those 14 wrestlers, 10 of them came home with a medal and qualified for the regional championships in Pocatello, ID, June 23-27. In Fresno Steven Ramirez placed sixth in the bantam division, and Cole Gregerson placed fifth in the intermediate division. The novice division had the most success with Jacob Romeo placing sixth, Patrick Ramirez and Darryl Aiello placing fifth, and Jaron Chavez and Andrew Cervantez placing first. In the schoolboy division Westley Hart placed fourth, Nathan Cervantez placed second and Jon Jay Chavez placed first.

The CYC also hosted the Jr. Greco World Duals last month with teams from all across the US and Germany coming to compete. The CYC team finished in third place behind the Missouri-Kansas and the USA All Stars. The CYC wrestlers all faired very well in the individual competition. Jon Jay Chavez placed second at 115 lbs, Jesse Baldazo placed first at 145 lbs, Tyler Sheridan placed second at 174 lbs, Luke Sheridan placed first at 190 lbs, Nick Pica placed first at 216 lbs and Orry Elor placed third at 285 lbs.

Coming up is an elementary wrestling camp July 5-8, and an all-comers camp for all ages and levels July 19-23. These camps are a great opportunity for kids to try out wrestling for the first time, as well as for experienced

Wrestling Student of the Month is Andrew Cervantez. Andrew won the prestigious California Triple Crown last month. In order to win the Triple Crown you must win the Folkstyle, Greco and Freestyle State Championships all in the same calendar year.
