The CYC wrestling program offers young athletes the opportunity to participate and excel in one of the world's oldest sports. The program trains and challenges wrestlers at all age groups from kindergarten through high school, and all experience levels from beginner to champion. June 2011
At the beginning of May the CYC wrestling team sent 25 wrestlers down to the Kids Greco Roman and Cadet Freestyle State Championships in Fresno, CA. In their respective divisions, all 19 students that went placed in the top 6 of their weight class, and seven of them were state champions. Notable performances were Stephen Ramirez and Nathan Cervantez who have both won the folkstyle and greco state championships. That means that if they win in the freestyle state championships in June, they will both win California’s coveted Triple Crown award. CYC also won the team titles in the novice (11-12 years old) and schoolboy (13-14 years old) divisions for the second year in a row. Additionally, CYC won the cadet freestyle team title with 3 wrestlers bringing home medals.
In June there will be two tournaments for the elementary and middle school wrestlers. They will be traveling to Fresno for the Freestyle State Championships set to take place June 3-5. Then, June 20-30, they will be traveling to the Western Regional Championships in Pocatello, ID as well as to the National Championships in Orem, UT. These will be by far their toughest tournaments of the year. They will be facing the toughest competition from across the US for a chance to become national champions.
Wrestling Student of the Month is Stephen Ramirez, K5 advanced wrestling class, for winning both the folkstyle and greco state championships. |
