Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that emphasizes kicking techniques but also includes many hand strikes and other movements. The movements may be powerful and explosive, but also graceful, and when well-executed, beautiful to watch. More > |

May 2008

Our next big event will be the CYC “Taekwondo Spring Classic” tournament, here at the CYC on Saturday, May 17th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is an opportunity for students to get experience in the competitive aspect of Taekwondo, and for parents to get involved too. Parents and senior students can learn to be referees, judges, and other officials through training classes at CYC on May 13 & 15 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 pm. Pizza will be provided. It takes quite a number of people doing various tasks to make a competition run smoothly. Please RSVP with Kim Garcia at ext. 217.
Competing in events like this has a lot of benefits for young students. There is a certain amount of pressure when competing in front of a crowd, so they have to learn how to keep their focus and concentration. Winning and losing are not the absolute most important factors, but challenging yourself to do your best to win is a valuable experience. We plan to invite a small number of students from other schools, so our athletes get to test themselves against somebody new, rather than just their CYC friends. Having students from outside gives them exposure to the bigger picture of Taekwondo out in the community.
For parents, of course we want everyone to be involved and help out to make it a success. It really encourages a young student when their mom or dad is part of the activity. The CYC is strictly a youth center so we can’t offer Taekwondo classes for parents, but you can be a big part of the program by volunteering for this kind of event. In addition to supporting the Taekwondo program when you are familiar with the rules and procedures it makes it much easier to talk to your son or daughter about class.
We are planning to start some official competitive teams for those who want to get more serious about tournament competition. The details are being worked out, and we will get the information to you in the weeks ahead. We expect to get the teams up and running starting in September 2008.
Bryanna Pizzagoni is Student of the Month. Bryanna had some challenges meeting her Physical Fitness goals to qualify for her Blue Belt. However, she didn’t give up, and after several months of consistent effort, she passed the last element she needed, and received her belt in April. Congratulations!
