The CYC Outdoor Activities program is designed to provide youth with a rare opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and all its benefits. The CYC aspires to give kids an appreciation for nature and teach them the importance of its conservation and further preservation. The CYC staff is able to accomplish these goals with the use of Rancho Esquon, the 'Flying A' Boat, Grizzly Island Property, Camp Concord and Camp Nejedly. All of these locations and entities are available to give boys and girls a natural environment in which to explore and learn. More >

February 2011

The start of the youth hunt program hosted by California Waterfowl Association is winding down. On January 8 youth hunted waterfowl at Grizzly Island Ranch. They started with a refresher course on hunting safety Friday evening, and then youth and parents, along with a guide, enjoyed a beautiful day in the marsh. This year the Grizzly Ranch hunt experience has been amazing although the weather conditions haven’t been ideal. The thick, low fog made hunting difficult. Many ducks were flying which caused quick buzzes in the blind. Nevertheless, youth hunters prevailed by harvesting 20 birds. The catch was a mix of teal, pintail, mallard and a mighty spoony. One hunter had his limit on ducks by 7:30 am, and another killed a banded hen mallard. Finally, three youth hunters harvested their first birds!
Outdoor Activities has started a weekly class on Thursdays, CYC vs. Wild. Students work on outdoor safety in a team work setting. Topics include hiking skills, responsibility in the outdoors, wildlife conservation, navigation using compasses and topographical maps, outdoor equipment use, outdoor preparation and some survival skills. Class meets every Thursday and runs from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.
Outdoor Activities Student of the Month is Isabella Teran.
