The CYC Outdoor Activities program is designed to provide youth with a rare opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and all its benefits. The CYC aspires to give kids an appreciation for nature and teach them the importance of its conservation and further preservation. The CYC staff is able to accomplish these goals with the use of Rancho Esquon, the 'Flying A' Boat, Grizzly Island Property, Camp Concord and Camp Nejedly. All of these locations and entities are available to give boys and girls a natural environment in which to explore and learn. More >

What’s a Wood Duck Box? On April 12th the members of the CYC got a first hand look at how these unique boxes are made and what they are used for. These boxes are made to represent tree hollows, where a particular species of duck nest rather than in the ground like most waterfowl. Grizzly Island was the perfect classroom setting where the kids not only learned about Wood Duck Boxes but about the surrounding marshlands and different species of birds, including the White Tailed Herring. The kids also enjoyed a nature hike and “built” their own species of duck.
On April 19th, the Flying A set sail on a cruise of the San Francisco Bay. CYC members enjoyed beautiful views of Angel Island, At&T Park and sailed under the Bay Bridge. They toured the San Francisco Maritime Museum where the kids got up close to some of the largest ships ever to sail the ocean. While on the cruise, the kids enjoyed watching a group of fishermen with their nets, hauling in vast amounts of sardines. The kids had a blast!
The Outdoor Activities program would also like to introduce a new award that follows the example from the other programs, Camper of the Month! This month’s inaugural award winner is Izabella Teran. Izabella has been a terrific camper with an excellent attitude. She is eager to learn and has perfect boating manners.
More adventurous trips are scheduled for Grizzly Island, The Flying A and upcoming summer camps. See Joe Coniglio for dates and times. Be sure to get your permission slips in!
