  Gary Sullenger  
  Head Boxing Coach  
     
 

Gary Sullenger has been involved in amateur and professional boxing for more than 30 years with the past six years as Head Boxing Coach at Community Youth Center. Since joining CYC in 2001, he has taken the program to new levels by teaching and developing discipline and good moral character in his young participants. As a result of his coaching style, Coach Sullenger has produced several elite amateur boxers including Golden Glove, Silver Glove, P.A.L., and Jr. Olympic, regional, state and national champions.

Coach Sullenger was the California National Team Coach for the 2005 Junior Olympic Nationals and was selected by USA Boxing to participate as a coach at the “Train the Trainer” elite coaches clinic at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs that same year. Coach Sullenger received another honor when he was named 2007 Men's National Team Coach.

More recently, in 2009, Gary received three major acknowledgements. After being selected as head coach of the Northern California P.A.L. Nationals Team, he was selected as a coach on Team USA vs. Great Britain for a dual meet in London. Finally, in November, he was selected to the USA Boxing Ranking Committee, becoming one of only three people in the U.S. who contribute rankings of USA boxers.

Prior to CYC, Coach Sullenger owned and operated his own professional boxing school where he managed and trained several amateur and professional champions competing worldwide. He has been in the corner for stars such as Fernando Vargas, David Tua, Jose Luis Lopez, Nicky Walker, Karama Leota and Juan Arias. He has not only trained boxers in the U.S., but also in England, Germany, South Africa, and on the amateur level, he has been invited to coach at the World Games and the Pan-Am Games.

Juan Arias joined the CYC Coaching staff in 2006. Juan has an extensive background in boxing. He began is career boxing under Coach Sullenger at the age of 19. He spent fourteen years in the amateur and professional ranks. He made several appearences on HBO, Pay-Per-View and Telemundo Boxing. Juan obtained many titles while in the pros. He is a former top ten world rated boxer, Former WBC Latin American Champion, and North West Boxing Champion. Juan is a dedicated coach that enjoys sharing his knowledge with CYC members.
