| CYC wrestlers earn national honors | |

The Community Youth Center (CYC) Wrestling program participated in the FILA Cadet (15 to 17 years old) Greco Roman and Freestyle National Championships in Akron Ohio from April 9 through 11. In the Greco Roman competition Luke Sheridan (De La Salle High) captured the bronze medal after posting a 4-1 record. Sheridan beat wrestlers from Florida, North Carolina, and Missouri before dropping a close decision (1-0, 0-2, 0-1) to the eventual champion Brandon Griffin from Oregon. Sheridan came back and pinned Mickey Pelfrey from Iowa in 34 seconds in the bronze medal match. Orry Elor (College Park) also placed third in the heavyweight division. Elor lost his first match to Doug Vallaro from Florida and then wrestled back to the bronze medal match where he defeated Nick Nusekabel from Ohio. In the Freestyle tournament Sheridan also earned All-American status with a second-place finish. Sheridan won his first two matches against wrestlers from Florida and Iowa. He then pinned two returning All-Americans John Bulich from Pennsylvania, and Dwight Howes from Colorado to make the national finals for the second time. In the finals, Sheridan lost a hard-fought match to returning national champion Austin Marsden from Illinois (0-1, 1-1, 5-4) for the silver medal. Heavyweight Elor also earned All-American honors with a third-place finish. Orry again lost to Vallaro from Florida before defeating wrestlersfrom Illinois and Ohio to earn the right to wrestle for the bronze medal. In the bronze medal match Orry defeated Greg Kuhar from Ohio (3-2, 5-2). Also competing in the national tournament for the CYC were Alex Abono (De La Salle), Joe Moita (De La Salle), Joey Ramirez (De La Salle), and Devin Aiello (De La Salle). |
