Honoring Gary Sullenger

If you open the dictionary and look up the word “honor,” you will see synonyms such as respect, integrity, trust, and reverence. There are many who believe you also would see a photo of CYC head boxing coach Gary Sullenger. With his love for the sport of boxing, but more importantly, his love for his boxing kids, Gary was honored over and over during the past month.

November began with Gary being named CYC employee of the month. Since joining the center in April 2002, Gary has grown the boxing program into one of the most prestigious and respected in the United States. For more than 30 years, he has worked in professional and amateur boxing realms, leading both professionals and amateurs to championships at all levels. “Gary is one of the stalwarts of CYC and his many, many hours dedicated to kids and his strong work ethic are of the highest caliber,” said Nick Schweickert, CYC Campus Manager.

“You don’t just teach the kids to fight,” Sullenger added. “You teach them to be good kids.” Gary has coached four professional World Champions, but emphasizes, “I’ve never felt more satisfaction than when one of my CYC kids fights.”

Sullenger’s hard work has paid off as the CYC boxing team has nearly tripled in size during the past year. Thus, Gary travels most weekends to get CYC kids experience in the competitive sectors. It has recently been one of the busiest and most successful periods for CYC boxing with the team winning 51 of 58 bouts. The entire boxing program has skyrocketed in attendance numbers and enrolled kids, all wanting to learn discipline, dedication and desire from Coach Sullenger.

More accolades came Gary’s way when he was honored at the Northern California Veteran Boxers Association dinner on November 24th in San Francisco. He was recognized along with Alexis Arguello, one of the great champions in boxing history.

“The fact that Gary was honored alongside a man like Arguello is a statement as to how special Gary Sullenger is,” said Schweickert. “Kids from the community are lucky to have a man like Gary Sullenger around.”
