Did you know this about Gary Sullenger? |
October 2006 - Gary has developed one of the most well respected amateur boxing programs in the Western U.S. The CYC has posted the highest winning percentage of any Northern California team.
Believes his most important role is as a mentor. “You don’t just teach the kids to fight,” he said. “You teach them to be good kids.” He has coached four professional World Champions, but emphasizes, “I’ve never felt more satisfaction than when one of my CYC kids fights.”
Received a baseball scholarship to the University of Texas, but was unable to attend as he stayed home to take care of his mom who had cancer.
A self-described “hobo,” he used to hop the freight trains to travel between his parents’ homes in Texas and California.
Three weeks before his first pro fight, Gary had a serious motorcycle accident when he was hit by a drunk driver. He needed 11 surgeries and was oftentimes very bitter. But he now looks at it as a blessing because it led him to his true passion – teaching and coaching kids.
The boxing program has expanded to five nights a week (3:00-9:00 p.m.) and Saturdays (10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.) For more information, contact Gary Sullenger at the CYC at (925) 671-7070. |
