CYC Outdoor Activities Program |
May 2007 - The adventures continue at the Community Youth Center with the introduction of the first-ever Outdoor Activities Program.
CYC’s Outdoor Activities Program Director Lauren Healy is spearheading adventures across Northern California. Healy and 12 kids recently launched on the “Flying A,” a 50-foot boat available to CYC youth for educational and exploratory trips. The boat trips give children a chance to observe historical sights, learn rich Northern California history and relish views along the beautiful San Francisco Bay. Oftentimes, they may stop to explore Angel Island or Grizzly Island, or they may even try to catch a fish or two!
“With the creation of the Outdoor Activities Program, CYC will not only provide athletic and academic growth, but a chance to expand young minds in the realm of the outdoors,” said Healy. “This program will educate the youth in the community and give them a well-rounded life experience; an opportunity for adventure.”
Each month, another group will trek up to Rancho Esquon, a 6,000-acre preserve, 20 minutes from Chico, to experience wildlife education and preservation. Trips to the Jack London Square Art Museum, China Basin and more are also on the calendar.
And, kids can even sign-up for Camp Concord and Camp Nejedly, giving them the opportunity to experience week-long camps in the Sierra Wilderness near Lake Tahoe.
Kids exemplifying CYC core values of “discipline, dedication and desire” are being recommended by coaches for these life opportunities they might otherwise not have the chance to experience! |
